State Representative Natalie Higgins to Hold Morning Office Hours, Fridays 7:00-8:00AM, Rotating throughout the City

Leominster: State Representative Natalie Higgins will begin holding her morning office hours on Fridays from 7:00-8:00AM, rotating throughout the city. The morning office hours will kick off this Friday February 3rd, at the Daily Bagel (582 N Main Street, Leominster, MA 01453).

Representative Higgins pledged during her campaign to make her office accessible to working families, with early morning and evening hours in the community. “I wanted to highlight the great small businesses we have in the city of Leominster, so it made sense to reach out and have some of our morning office hours in the local breakfast spots,” said Representative Higgins.

The first and last Friday of the month, Representative Higgins will be rotating around the community (locations to be posted in the local papers, her website, and her social media pages), with the remaining Fridays at her district office in Room 29 of the Gallagher Building (24 Church Street, Leominster, MA 01453).

Representative Higgins also has Monday evening hours from 5:30-7:00PM at the Leominster Public Library in the Small Conference Room 204.

Additional questions can be directed to Representative Higgins through email ([email protected]) or by phone (978-602-3772).

Representative Higgins Statement RE: Today's Compensation Vote

1/25/2017

LEOMINSTER -- Today I voted in support of a piece of legislation related to the compensation of the Legislature, Constitutional Officers, and the Judiciary. This was not an easy decision for me to make, but after talking to a number of Leominster residents, I believe it is the right one.

This legislation is the product of a data-driven review of compensation for public officials by a bi-partisan special advisory commission. There are many parts of the bill that I believe are smart policy changes, including the reform of the per diem compensation, the shifting of that funding to the poorly resourced district offices, and the preclusion of the Constitutional Officers, and House Speaker and Senate President from earning outside income. Moreover, this legislation will not impact taxpayers and will be funded within the current appropriation for the 2017 fiscal year.

When I was campaigning, the issue of per diem compensation came up time and time again. While it had the good intentions of equalizing the offices across the State, it was not necessarily transparent, could be taken advantage of, was not friendly when it came to budget planning.

Importantly, funding has been shifted from the per diems into the budget for district offices, and while I am fortunate to have a district office in a municipal building, not all of my colleagues have the same benefit. Before this legislation, state legislators had a budget of $600 for their district office, which barely covers the cost of an office space and utilities, nevermind other rising costs like postage.

I had hoped my first vote as State Representative would be on another subject matter, but this is a very important piece of legislation that has been delayed for decades because of the uncomfortable nature of it all.

NEW BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR MASSACHUSETTS CAUCUS OF WOMEN LEGISLATORS

BOSTON – The Massachusetts Caucus of Women Legislators has announced their Board of Directors for the 2017-2018 legislative session.

Senator Jennifer Flanagan (D-Leominster) and Representative Colleen Garry (D-Dracut) will serve as Co-Chairs; Senator Eileen Donoghue (D-Lowell) and Representative Christine Barber (D-Somerville) will serve as Co-Vice Chairs; Representative Carolyn Dykema (D-Holliston) was elected Treasurer; and past Senate Chair Senator Anne Gobi (D-Spencer), Representative Hannah Kane (R-Shrewsbury), Representative Denise Garlick (D-Needham), Representative Carole Fiola (D-Fall River), Representative Marjorie Decker (D-Cambridge), Representative Juana Matias (D-Lawrence) and Representative Natalie Higgins (D-Leominster) will also serve on the Board.

Established in 1975, the Massachusetts Caucus of Women Legislators was formed with a mission to enhance the economic status and equality of women and to encourage and support women in all levels of government. It is a bi-cameral and bi-partisan organization that is comprised of the women State Senators and State Representatives at the State House. The Board of Directors serves as the governing body of the Women’s Caucus and provides guidance on events and policy.

“As a freshman legislator and a young woman, it is an honor and a privilege to serve on the Massachusetts Caucus of Women Legislators. The Caucus has a rich history supporting women in government and fighting for women’s equality across the Commonwealth, and I look forward to working with the rest of the Board to build upon this important work.”

There are currently 52 women legislators that make up 26% of the Massachusetts legislature. Throughout the history of the Commonwealth, only 196 women have served as elected officials in the legislature compared to over 20,000 men.
